Lomba Tantum cable car that facilitates the transport of Peixe has been out of order for three months with no prospect of repair
Nova Sintra, Jul 30, 2023 (Bravanews) - The community of Lomba Tantum, known for its fishing tradition and located close to Praia de Tantum, has been facing a persistent problem for three months with the breakdown of the cable car that was crucial for the efficient transport of fish from the beach to the village. Equipment downtime has caused significant hardship for local fishermen and negatively impacted fish supplies in the region.
The cable car, which used to be a practical solution for transporting fresh fish and seafood from Praia de Tantum to Lomba, had serious mechanical failures in mid-April this year. Since then, fishermen have been forced to resort to less efficient alternatives, such as using younger people from the village, which entails longer transport times, higher costs and can compromise the quality of the fish.
The residents of Lomba Tantum are deeply concerned about the situation and feel helpless in the absence of news about the repair of the cable car. They claim that they have been seeking answers from local authorities, in this case the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture, and those responsible for maintaining the equipment, but so far, they have not received any position on the deadline for resuming the system's operation.
In an interview, one of the local fishermen expressed his frustration with the lack of action: "The cable car was essential for our work, it saved time and guaranteed that the fish arrived fresh as far as Lomba Tantum. Now, we have to make do with precarious alternatives, and this impacts our income and also the availability of fish to the community."
In addition to fishermen, traders and residents of Lomba Tantum also face supply challenges. Fish is one of the main sources of food and income on the island, and the scarcity resulting from the breakdown of the cable car has raised concerns about the economic and nutritional stability of the region.
Faced with the seriousness of the situation, residents of Lomba Tantum are calling on local and regional authorities and those responsible for managing the cable car to take urgent and transparent measures to repair the equipment. Lack of communication about the current state of repair only adds to the anxiety and uncertainty faced by the community.
While fishermen and residents await a solution, the scenario remains challenging and raises questions about the need for investments and proper maintenance in essential infrastructure for the well-being of coastal communities. The restoration of the Lomba Tantum cable car is seen as a fundamental step towards the return to normality in fishing activities and for the livelihood and quality of life of local inhabitants.
